Research Location Samar Island
Research Description The project will generate new and relevant knowledge on the nature of soils in degraded uplands in Samar. It will be an important contribution to the body of knowledge about these problems soils in the Philippines the sustainable management and rehabilitation of which is vital for the government’s food security program. The proposed basic research may not have direct socio-economic impact but it can have important indirect impact since the results can be a vital input to any projects or initiative aimed at improving the productivity of poor farmers living in the degraded uplands.
Research Objectives The research aims to evaluate the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the degraded upland soils in Samar Island, assess their nutrient status, determine the critical soil factors limiting crop production in these lands, evaluate the biophysical and anthropogenic factors affecting their fertility status.
