Research Description Eastern Visayas, as a primarily agricultural region with about 28% of its gross value added product is from the fishery sector in 2007. The establishment of EVCCRD will be beneficial to the local government of Eastern Visayas specifically in the provision of the much needed information, strategies, technologies which they will need for policy formulation for fisheries and aquatic resources management and sustainable utilization. All these outputs of the center will be geared towards improving social conditions of their constituents. The stock assessment and reproductive biology of the blue swimming crab will be able to provide scientific information as basis to develop sustainable fisheries management plans. The project report is primarily aimed at a knowledgeable readership comprising, in particular the scientists, consultants, fishery and environmental managers and more importantly members of the technical working group (TWG) of the Maqueda Bay Fisheries Management Board. It will also be made available to the various entities such as national, regional, city, municipalities and barangays, and to other stakeholders.
Research Objectives The study seeks to determine the following: 1. species composition of crustacean caught by the sampling gear and other fishing gears for crustacean; 2. spatial-temporal abundance and distribution of the blue swimming crab (P. pelagicus); 3. determine maturity stages and gonadosomatic index 4. length weight relationships 5. growth and mortality parameters (Z, M, F) and exploitation rates; 6. correlate physicochemical parameters with growth, abundance, distribution, maturity stages, etc. 7. standing stock and biomass estimates 8. document all existing fishing gears used and methods employed in catching Portunus pelagicus; 9. document the design and specification of each fishing gear for blue swimming crab 10. catch per unit effort (CPUE) of blue swimming crab caught by the common fishing gears; 11. total annual production of the P. pelagicus and other crustacean
