Research Title Taxonomy and Potentials of the Marine Algae of North Eastern Leyte Island
Research Personnel Leader:
Dr. Paciente Cordero

Research Duration Start:
1 January 2011
31 December 2011
Research Location Leyte
Research Description Both the biodiversity (=taxonomic) and ecological data including interviews on edible seaweeds of sea vegetables, are deemed baseline information on the marine algae resource of NE Leyte Island. These information are useful to both basic and applied biology researchers, students and teachers, especially those who wish to study the marine algal flora of the Philippines. Likewise, the same data on the economic potentials of seaweeds should be beneficial to the lowly fisherfolks nutrient requirements. It could provide solution to the cyclical problem on food security, by including the protein- and iodine rich sea vegetables in their meals like the Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans do. And, for entrepreneurs who may wish to invest in seaweed mari-farming and pave the way to establishing seaweed as a Sunshine Industry in the region.
Research Objectives The study aims to identify the biodiverse species and assess the economic potentials of the marine algae of Leyte Province, in Eastern Visayas. Collection and identification of marine algae/seaweeds from pre-designated coastal town of the northeastern coast of Leyte Province.
