Research Location UPLB-CAS-IBS
Research Description The garden will serve for teaching and research, promote biodiversity conservation and provide an oasis for relaxation. It will also serve as a hub for other future in situ medicinal plants in the country and for live medicinal plants' repository. It will provide propagules like seeds and stem cuttings when needed and will display the country's varied habitats as well as highlight sitespecific endemism.
Research Objectives a) Establish a medicinal plant garden nurturing the 10 DOH recommended, shortlisted priority plant species of the local herbal industry, selected plant species of the DOST initiatives for drug discovery and development, namely, the Discovery and Development of Health Products (DDHP) and the Tuklas Lunas (TL) programs, and other local plan species with traditional medicinal use and published scientific studies on these (e.g. cited in PROSEA Medicinal and Poisonous Plants); b) Develop a database for this collection of live plants that can be trans-operable with the Network Bioinformatics component; c) Prepare and safe keep voucher specimens of the garden plant species in herbaria; d) Put up a modest exhibit that can complement the garden in its functions for teaching, reserch and extension; e) Have an active participation under the Philippine Biorepository Network, with local medicinal plants' conservation as one of its thrusts.
Research Beneficiary(ies) a) Researchers working on plants in general and local medicinal plants, in particular; b) Students and the general public for knowledge of plants and their conservation; c) Entrepreneurs who may have interest in knowing the habit and agro-cultural needs of particular plant species; d) Policy makers, for example on herbal medicine, whose experience can further be enriched by a direct exposure to medicinal plants; e) Academe; f) Pharmaceutical industry.
Research Accoplishments [CY 2017] a) A working and evolving source of information on the habit, morphology and botanical identification of priority local plant species that are human health promoting; b) Generation of a database of medicinal plant species growing in the proposed garden as well as in other gardens in UPLB and vicinity; c) Herbarium of voucher specimens of the selected plant species; d) A display cabinet on medicinal plants, the proposed Network and updates in this field; e) A bank of live plants under the proposed Philippine Biorepository Network that can provide propagules when needed.
