Research Description This project will establish a centralized repository for all plant extracts/compounds and other plant derivatives especially those with therapeutic potential and come up with a reliable easy to access database, safe from external tampering.
Research Objectives aa) Establish a structurally secure repository for plant extracts/compounds with storage facility for specimens that may need to be in room temperature, in deep-freeze state or lyophilized; b) Craft implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR); c) Serve as curator of the extracts deposited, following best practices from ISBER and in consultation with experienced curators from more established biobanks; d) Set up in coordination with Project 5 on data management, a tamper=proof and secure database of all the plants deposited complete with information specific to the plants (i.e. information as detailed in the methodology. Accompanying information should provide the proof of complying with government rules on bioprospecting set by the country of source. Database software should be useful in tracking the stored extracts, with the availability to document access to the stored resource).
Research Beneficiary(ies) a) Researchers working on plants in general and local medicinal plants, in particular; b) Students and the general public for knowledge of plants and their conservation; c) Entrepreneurs who may have interest in knowing the habit and agro-cultural needs of particular plant species; d) Policy makers, for example on herbal medicine, whose experience can further be enriched by a direct exposure to medicinal plants; e) Academe; f) Pharmaceutical industry.
Research Accoplishments [CY 2017] a) At least 1 article published in peer-reviewed journal; b) Training of research personnel and students on botanical identification, preparation of herbarium specimen, detection of variation within species, propagation of selected plant species; c) Biobanked samples/specimens for development/further research, and other applications; d)Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) on collection, processing, storage, maintenance, sharing and distribution of biospecimens to support future scientific investigation; e) IP on geographical indication; f) Functional biorepository facilities of Philippine herbal medicine's live plants, seeds, DNA/RNA, plant extracts/compounds with data management and database backup systems in place; g) Accessioned herbarium of voucher specimens of selected plant species; h) A display cabinet on medicinal plants, the proposed Network and updates in this field; i) Academic/research institutions partnership/network involving IBS-UPB, RCNAS-UST, IB-UPD, DSCF-PGC and MSIUPD
