Research Description Developing products and technologies to address pressing health problems in the Philippines is one of the researches and development priorities of the Department of Science and Technology. Drug Discovery and development from natural sources has been stressed in the National Unified Health Research Agenda (NUHRA) with the Philippines having been identified as center of biodiversity. Establishment of the DOST Tuklas Lunas Development Center in the Region VII at the University of San Carlos underscores the commitment of the agency to pursue drug development from endemic and/or indigenous species through this regional screening and extraction center.
Research Objectives Molecular identification of candidate plant extracts, Database of Plant toxicity information through cell-based toxicity assay of the crude and partitioned plant extracts, Increased capability of the USC-TLDC laboratory by acquisition of additional equipment for toxicological and orthogonal assays.

Research Accoplishments [CY 2018] 1. Publication - paper publication and presentation in local and internationally recognized scientific symposia, when appropriate; 2. Patents/Intellectual Property - a.) bioassay profiles for the different crude and partitioned plant extracts for different biological assays to determine their effects against diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, antibodybased immunodetection, obesity and lipolysis using validated processes related to the use of mammalian cells for natural products discovery and research; b.) molecular identification of candidate plant extracts; 3. Products - Database of plant toxicity of information through cell-based toxicity assay of the crude and partitioned plant extracts; 4. People Services - Enhancement of personnel (trained at UP-NIMBB), research staff, and student skills and techniques on the use of mammalian cell lines for toxicity assay; 5. Places and Partnerships - a.) increased capability of the USC-TLDC laboraotry of acquisition of additional equipment for toxicological and orthogonal assays; b.) MOA/MOU with selected cooperating agencies when applicable
