Research Description Mount Makiling is considered to be the most accessible tourist destination, 65km away from Manila. The possible increase in the number of visitors due to its development as ecotourism destination should be properly managed. It requires a more progressive visitor management strategies and programs that will ensure its good state. Initiatives and efforts on the development of MMFR as an ecotourism destination through infrastructures is in place however, the very basic information on MMFR’s carrying capacity is not yet determined. Thus, the team would like to determine the carrying capacity of the busiest areas in MMFR – the Mariang Makiling Trail (MMT), Sipit Trail and Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG). This will determine the limits or threshold of the mountain in terms of the number of visitors and will serve as basis in visitor management program of the MMFR AHP which is one of the programs developed in its management plan.
Research Objectives The project generally aims to develop the carrying capacity of the Makiling Forest Reserve ASEAN Heritage Park (MMFR AHP) as ecotourism destination. Specifically, it aims to: 1) Identify factors that influences MMFR’s carrying capacity; 2) Estimate MMFR’s carrying capacity; and 3) Recommend appropriate strategies related to visitor use and management based on its carrying capacity.
